Support First Generation Undergraduate Students
Higher education today puts an increasing emphasis on experiential learning activities, such as field trips, internships, study tours, overseas service learning and exchange programmes.
The First-in-the-Family Education (FIFE) Fund was launched in April 2008. It provides financial assistance to first-generation students at HKU to attend university and participate in various outside-classroom learning activities.
Promote Equal Learning Opportunities
HKU believes that no students should be deprived of good education due to financial constraints. The FIFE Fund differs from other giving programmes at HKU in its core concepts of social mobility and serial reciprocity. It goes beyond financial assistance and seeks to break the cycle of inter-generational poverty. The FIFE Scheme won the Overall Grand Gold medal and a Gold medal in the Fundraising Programmes Category of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Awards 2009.

Promote the act of “paying forward”
(受恩施恩、薪火相傳)
Fund recipients are expected to serve the community, create opportunities for others and share with other students on what they have learned; thus raising their social conscience during the early days at HKU. Upon graduation, they are supposed to further engage in the advancement of society.
