Alumnus Keith Shing shared how he utilised the HKU First-in-the-Family Education (FIFE) Fund to engage himself in an overseas internship in New York and got inspired.

Alumna Judy Ng shared how she made use of the HKU First-in-the-Family Education (FIFE) Fund to participate in volunteer service in Japan where she could practice her Japanese skills and connect with local people.

Summer Placement in Taiwan

"The placement not only allowed me to try the way of learning and living in Taiwan, but also to learn from Taiwan’s social work on how to meet service users’ needs under the influence of Asian culture, how to empower them with confidence, and how to help them be happier.

Experienced the great support from FIFE and had unforgettable learning experiences, I will make contributions to help the needy or donate money to support FIFE and other similar funds for underprivileged students in the future."

"The support from the FIFE Fund has not only facilitated my initial learning but has also instilled a lasting passion for the Korean language. I have successfully obtained the Level 2 qualification with full marks in the Test of Proficiency in Korean. This achievement reflects my dedication and hard work, and it would not have been possible without the generous support from the FIFE Fund, which empowered my language journey."

"I had the privilege of participating in an exchange program at the University of Salzburg in Austria. This experience served as a pivotal opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and develop my ability to tackle new challenges. During the exchange, I encountered numerous obstacles — from building rapport with my French roommate to collaborating with foreign professors and classmates. Although these interactions were initially daunting, they ultimately became invaluable learning experiences that enriched my personal and academic growth."

"During my time in Nanjing, we visited local primary and secondary schools in mainland China. The teachers at these schools shared many valuable teaching experiences, and I was honored to have the opportunity to practice teaching a chapter in front of the school principal and other educators. This was my first time teaching in Mandarin, and I made significant improvements in my language skills."
